Rac(e)ing through Presidential Time

Which candidates had ancestors who allegedly owned slaves?

Not that it makes a difference but members of both parties, including John McCain, John Edwards, and Barack Obama!

Well, there goes the reparations issue!

Then again, wait and see—Democrats circulated pamphlets by an Ohio professor (William Chancellor) stating that Warren G. Harding had a black ancestor and was thus the “first black president.”

This all reminds me of the dedication to George Schuyler’s Black No More (1931):

“This book is dedicated to all Caucasians in the great republic who can trace their ancestry back ten generations and confidently assert that there are no Black leaves, twigs, limbs, or branches on their family trees.”

Of course, the reverse is true too!

Hopefully some day we will realize the fuller meaning of the Bible verse favored by abolitionists:

“In that new creation there is neither Greek nor Jew, circumcision nor uncircumcision, barbarian, Scythian, slave nor free man, but Christ is everything and is in all of us.” (Colossians 3:11)
