Noel Campbell on Immigration

My Division of Labour co-blogger Noel Campbell hits a home run with today’s post on immigration. Two key quotes:
Arizona doesn’t have an illegal immigration problem; Arizona has an organized crime violence problem. What created the incentives for organized crime (and its penchant for violence) to develop? Well, the War on Drugs, of course.
The United States doesn’t have an illegal immigration problem; it has a government entitlements problem.
The whole thing is here. My most recent Forbes.com piece was a contribution to this symposium on immigration. Here’s an earlier Forbes.com contribution on immigration.

I am a conservative with libertarian leanings. I wish libertarians would remember the prerequisite necessary before open borders and drug legalization, etc., can even be considered. The prerequisite is to eliminate all socialistic government programs first, which is something we may be all be able to agree on.
Also, I did not realize that our country has a duty to cure world poverty, however the religious among us are free to make their contributions.

W. Hembree, you are right – sort of... Liberty isn’t a first- second – third thing. True all abuses of liberty cause problems in other areas; such as the welfare state has created an immigration symptom (we have no immigration problem). The solution – as you allude – is to end the welfare state, end the drug war, and eliminate the limits on legal visas. But we cannot increase the infringement of liberty at the borders while waiting for the abuses at home to be reformed. We must turn our attention away from the border, and put or focus 100% on the problems that caused this symptom in the first place, which is why you will find libertarians working on drug war reform, and an end to socialism (welfare).
