What If She Had Been Unarmed?

Melinda Herman was a victim of a home invasion. With two children under her care, and a husband many miles away, she fortunately had a weapon. Although under the castle doctrine, she had no duty to retreat from the invader, she ran with her children to the attic and tried to hide. Her back to the wall, she emptied her revolver into the invader, hitting him five times. He still had the strength to get up and flee from the home.

What if she had been unarmed? The local sheriff observed: “Had it not turned out the way that it did, I would possibly be working a triple homicide, not having a clue as to who it is we’re looking for.”

Despite the current push to outlaw high-capacity magazines and certain rifles, it sounds to me like Mrs. Herman could have used both of these for family protection. Fortunately, this situation turned out well though she was armed with just a small revolver. But anti-gun crusaders need to keep in mind that home invasions and such are real dangers for law abiding citizens. We must be able to protect ourselves and our families.

  1. What are the frequency, per year, of these home invasions?

  2. A lady pushed a man in front of a subway train and he was killed. Now we should outlaw subway trains. The liberal media should focus on the cure and not the band-aid. More people are killed by car accidents than are shot to death. Armed citizens are the reason there are fewer criminals not laws that are c*** written on paper. Politicians need to get their heads out of the sand and come to reality. Contact your political representatives and voice your opinion. Even if you fools voted for Obama.

  3. According to the U.S. Department of Justice, one in five American homes (over 2,000,000) experiences a break in or home invasion annually. The statistics also indicate that 38% of assaults reported and 60% of the rapes occur during a break in or home invasion.

  4. I suspect...had he killed them all with the wrecking bad he used to break in; there would be little press, as no gun would have been involved. Guns are a hot button right now, and as such, headline fodder.
She certainly did everything right, used her weapon as the last resort.

  5. And remember those stats are just the home invasions that are reported, many go unreported. As far the number of assaults and rapes going unreported the number is estimated to be something on the order of 3 million every year

  6. This is b*******. I am more afraid of the middle class guy than some inner city hood. Fight instead for the manufacturing jobs you have lost or the middle class jobs. Get involved. I would read Willy Shih’s new book http://www.hbs.edu/faculty/Pages/profile.aspx?facId=194874l. I also would get Xconomy – free emailing every day. Stop pot and guns. This will only lead to legalization of more drugs and the US becoming a Potterville. There are many ways to skin a cat – insure you and your children’s future.
